Red Orpington
This is one of the “original” varieties of Orpingtons. Few things are more striking than the deep, rich color of a Red! Like all Orpingtons, they handle confinement well or can be free ranged. These stunning dual purpose very large birds are prolific layers of large, cream colored eggs, and are exceptionally hardy during the winter months.
When breeding Red Orpingtons it is advisable to cross to black every now and then, otherwise the color will lighten. You can breed Red to Black and cross the reddest birds back to pure non-related Red. Some Reds will end up with more black in the tail but this is acceptable in the breed standard. Buff has also been used to breed to reds with too much black in the tail. Eye color on Red Orpingtons is orange-red, the beak and legs are white.
Our Reds have exceptionally deep rich color. Currently we have breeders from Carolina Rare Chicks in SC. We will be adding more lines soon for genetic diversity.
