Olive Eggers
This is a variety of chicken that will lay an olive colored egg. These interesting chickens are created by crossing a bird hatched from a dark brown egg (like Marans, Welsummers, Barnevelder, Empordanesa and Penedesenca) and a bird hatched from a blue egg (like Ameraucanas, Araucana, and Cream Legbars). Generally speaking, if you want very dark olive colored eggs, you need to start with one parent who comes from very dark egg layers, such as Marans. However, Welsummers crossed with blue egg birds can produce offspring who lay a beautiful lighter olive shade, often with freckles. An olive egger crossed back to a dark egg layer could produce offspring that lay an even darker khaki or mossy green egg. An olive egger crossed back to a blue egg layer could produce offspring that lay a very light minty green, a light teal green, or even a blue/green egg. As you can see, OE's green shade may vary widely! Every color is interesting and great to dress up any egg basket.
We are starting our Olive Egger flock with Black and Blue Copper Marans crossed to a Cream Legbar. We also have some Sapphire Gems that will be bred to a Crested Cream Legbar for a lighter olive green egg. Check back to see what other variations we are experimenting with!
